As spring pokes its little head up from the frosty garden mounds of the Willamette Valley, many Northwesterners are girding their respiratory systems for the coming onslaught of seasonal allergies. While there are several OTC remedies for seasonal allergies, there are just as many natural remedies worth trying — consider these three methods for combating the uncomfortable effects of spring fever.
Quercetin
Quercetin is a natural bioflavonoid that can help stabilize cells and prohibit the release of histamine. Most quercetin users start taking it about approximately a month before allergy season begins. As with any herb, check with your primary care physician before using, especially if you have a liver problem, are pregnant, or are on hormonal contraceptives.
Nettle Leaf
Nettle leaf is a very common local plant that can naturally block histamines. Nettle can be found growing wild in many areas of the Portland metro area; for allergy relief, capsules made from dried nettle leaves are an effective option.
Local Honey
Though much of the evidence is anecdotal, the theory is that consuming local honey from your city of residence will help your body adapt to the allergens in the environment there.
